AuSable Valley Snowmobile Association December Newsletter
Elections – At the General Membership meeting January 6, 2011 Rich Filley, Rob Tomlinson and Bill Weaver board seats will be up for re-election.
Have you heard of Winter Wildlands Alliance – If not you will, based in Boise, Idaho, it is present in dozen of states across the snowbelt… To say this group does not like snowmobiles is an understatement. It exists solely to work against snowmobiling and our access to public lands. They are backing a Michigan attorney who is challenging the U.S. Forest Service’s management plan for the Huron-Manistee National Forests which could limit snowmobile and hunting access to these public lands. If you want to know more about this group go to www.winterwildlands.org then contact our local and federal legislators to voice your strong opposition to this movement.
Trail Reports – The old Fred Bear Trail a portion of Trail #7 has been re-routed. A proposal was submitted and approved by the DNRE to re-route the Fred Bear Trail. Several reasons were stated for this change but primarily rider and groomer driver safety were the key issue. The new trail is just a little south of the original trail. Grading and signing was completed in early November and is ready for riding this season.
Did You Know? – There are more than 6,500 miles of groomed trails in Michigan. There are 69 grant holders (grooming groups) that maintain those trails – brush, sign and groom them. These are mostly manned by volunteers. It took more than 75,000 man hours to groom those trails during the 2009-2010 season. The equipment required to do the job totals more than 150 unites. The cost of each new grooming unit averages more than $180,000 per unit. (Source Michigan Snowmobile News November 2010)
