There are 287,000 people in America that swim all year round. They are taking to pools and lakes, even in Winter. Why? Because not only does it get you fitter, but there are some other amazing health benefits too. There are some beautiful, crystal clear lakes in and around Grayling for you to take the plunge, and you don’t need to pay a membership fee.
Higgins Lake, is located just west of Roscommon. There are 21 miles of coastline, and state parks at either end of the lake. It is one of the cleanest lakes in the area to swim in, just as good as going to the swimming pool for hygiene. The lake has a cool water temperature, even in summer – this improves your circulation. It is the reason that outdoor swimmers have a good complexion, and glowing skin. Stay out of the shallows at Higgins Lake however, and make sure that you don’t disturb the birds and snails.
Lake Margrethe is a favorite with the locals. Parts of the lake are within Camp Grayling, and often used by soldiers when they are off duty. There is access for tourists and residents via the Lake Margrethe State Forest Campground. The lake is also popular for fishing, as it has a good stock of bass and perch. The lake is fairly shallow, and ideal for swimming for fitness. Did you know that your burn off far more calories swimming outdoors than inside, as your body works to keep warm? Lake Margrethe is a great place to visit regularly, and make open swimming part of your fitness regime.
Kneff Lake in the Huron-Manistee National Forest is one of the most calm and secluded lakes for outdoor swimming, and it has a good beach area. You can make a day of it too, with a spot of fishing (plenty of trout. Campfires are allowed if you want to cook your own lunch. The campsite area is open from 1st May to 30th September, it’s tree-covered and really sheltered from the weather. Spending a relaxing day swimming in the lake can lower your stress levels and give you a real feeling of wellbeing. Kneff Lake is a great place for teaching your children to swim too.
Outdoor swimming will get you fit, boost your immune system and keep you healthy. There are some beautiful lakes around Grayling that you can visit all year round.
