Sorry for the late update, but with the rain and ice yesterday, no one was really sure how things would shake out. The groomers are not currently running. There are holes in the trails that are filled with water and not frozen over yet. What snow is on the trails is water-logged. It has snowed a couple of inches today, but not enough to groom. The groomer driver I talked to said trails are in poor condition right now.  For a glimpse into the future, here is the National Weather Service forecast…

It’s been snowing off and on all week, and it continues to snow today. The groomers are running. They report trails to be in good condition.  I haven’t measured, but I would guess there is at least 8 – 12 inches of snow on the trails. Traffic will be heavy this weekend, so drive carefully and watch out for the big green tractors on the trails! It’s time to ride!

General Membership Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month – Our next meeting will be on January 5th, 2012 at the Ramada Inn of Grayling starting at 7: pm.  AVSA meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Meeting dates for the remaining 2011–2012 season are as follows: February 2nd, 2012 – March 1st, 2012 – April 5th, 2012

As I sit here in the middle of December preparing this month’s newsletter I’m having trouble getting excited about this season with little to no snow on the ground.  Crawford County is roughly 25 inches behind our average snow fall for this time of year and we are not alone.   Know a good snow dance?

With little to report I dug into the 2010-2011 DNR Grant Summary*:

The DNR annually issues grants from the recreational snowmobile trail improvement subaccount to non-profit snowmobile trail sponsors. The following were for 2010-2011:

  • Equipment – $1,876,717
  • Grooming – $1,704,184
  • Special Maintenance (filling and grading, bridge repair and replacement, culverts, new development, etc.) – $1,546,548
  • Miscellaneous Expenses (comp insurance, liability insurance, land lease payments, snowplowing and portable toilets at trailheads) – $765,501
  • Brushing and Signing – $576,054
  • Major Repair of Equipment – $196,615
  • Signs and Posts – $95,726
  • Groomer Utility – $94,200
  • Contingency – $69,000
  • Fuel Adjustment – $63,394
  • Holdback for Next Year – $800,000

Number of designated snowmobile trail miles in 2010-11: 6,407 miles. This is slightly less than 2009-10 (6,412 miles).

Number of miles groomed in 2010-11: 372,906

Number of permits sold in 2010-11: 164,003

Total permit dollars received: $5,543,118

2011 snowmobile grant spending authority: $8,004,000
