Start and Finish at the Grayling Middle School near Downtown Grayling
Course:
Flat 6.2 Mile Road course that travels through downtown Grayling streets.
1 mile Fun Walk

The race is held the weekend prior to the AuSable River Canoe Marathon and runs from the streets of Grayling to McMaster’s Bridge. Time trials for starting position are held on Saturday in the City Park pond. The C-1 Race is on Saturday night and runs from Borcher’s Canoe Livery to Burton’s Landing. The C-2 race is on Sunday where the canoes and teams line up on Ingham Street at 8:30 am. The horn sounds at 9:00 am and the teams run towards the Old AuSable Fly Shop for the start of their race to McMaster’s Bridge.

Schedule of Events:

Registration for all Spike’s Challenge Events will run from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the City Park Pavilion. These events include C-1 Race, C-2 Race, Junior and Fledgling Races, Mentor Races etc.
Early Registration is appreciated. Please complete the C-2 Entry Form and /or C-1 Entry Form along with the Waiver and mail to the above address or drop it at the Grayling Marathon Office. Both paddlers must still sign in at the table in order to get a sprint position. Early registrants not sprinting must sign in by Sunday at 8:15 AM in Joe Wakeley’s Garage. There will be no registrations on Sunday July 22, 2012. All registrations must be received by Saturday July 21, 2012.

Sprints for Starting Position on City Park Pond – Participants will sprint in the order in which they register or sign-in at the registration table. There will be a 10-Minute break between each heat of 10 sprints. There will be two teams on the sprint course at a time. Teams may look over the course during the breaks. (See Sprint Rules)

Saturday Feb 18th:  The Back Up Race -  12KM-15KM Skate Race  Reg 8am-9:30am $20 Race Starts at 10am.

Trails groomed up very nicely yesterday. Snow pack is holding up very well. Groomer Greg snowcombed all the skating lanes on all the trails with great results. He also tried various ways of resetting the tracks with mixed results. By the end of the day we figured out how to Ginzu in new tracks on the Trapper’s Cabin and Tall Pines trails.
Greg will start grooming at 8AM this morning and will snowcomb the skating lanes on all the trails and Ginzu track set new tracks on the Wild Turkey, Rolling Hills, Mackinac Cut, Adventure, Trapper’s Cabin Trails. The trakcs on the Manitou Trail are skied in and still in good shape.

Wednesday night: Snow likely, mainly after 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 27. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

The Black Bear Bicycle Tour is a 100 mile bicycle tour that starts in Grayling, Michigan, winds through the beautiful forests of eastern Northern Michigan and follows portions of the AuSable River to finish the tour alongside the AuSable River near the end point of the AuSable River Canoe Marathon in Oscoda, Michigan. (The tour is completed just upriver from the Marathon ending point.)

Riders in waves of ten will depart each minute from 8AM to 9AM until all are gone. Riders will be assigned starting minutes according to request, availability and date of entry. We will do our best to place riders on requested minute and with riders of their choice. Please sign up early to increase the probability of getting your requested starting minute.

Proceeds will benefit the numerous community projects sponsored by the Grayling Rotary Club.

The 65th Anniversary 2012 AuSable River International Canoe Marathon begins with sprints for starting positions on Wednesday, July 25th and ends with the Black Bear Bicycle Tour on Sunday, July 29th.

This week long festival includes fun filled events such as Kid’s Day, Arts & Crafts show with over 100 vendors, and the Classic Car Show of Grayling. Other festivities include the AuSable River Festival Parade, 10k Fun Run & Walk, Food Court,  and the world-renowned Icehouse Quilt Shop’s Quilt Show on Friday & Saturday. Many local businesses will be participating all week with individual activities such as an Ice Cream Social, Community Coffee Break, Book Sale and a Chicken BBQ. Changes will be noted here as they become available.

The Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon is the richest canoe race in North America. The $50,000 purse will be up for grabs by expert paddlers from around the world. The racecourse runs almost the entire length of the AuSable River, 120 miles. Paddlers begin by running LeMans style on Saturday, July 28th at 9:00 p.m. to The Old AuSable Fly Shop with thousands of shouting spectators looking on. On Sunday morning, the Black Bear Bicycle Tour will depart for Oscoda to catch the paddlers at the end of their overnight adventure. The race ends Sunday, July 29th in Oscoda, MI on the shores of Lake Huron.

This stimulating race, a 6.2 mile (10K) or 3.1 mile (5k) course, begins and ends in the Hartwick Pines State Park picnic area and follows the “Weary Legs” or “Aspen” ski and biking trail in Grayling, Michigan. The two track trail takes you through rolling hills of pine, beech, birch and aspen. Your run is entirely through the woods and the surface is hard packed.

A no-fee walk thru the Old Growth White Pine foot trail, approximately one mile, will reward the participant with a view of the logging museum, logging camp and rustic chapel.

Hartwick Pines State Park directions: 4 miles north of Grayling off I-75 at exit 259, then right 2 miles on M-93. Take left at park entrance. Note: a state park passport is needed for entry to the park.
