Wellington Farm, USA is now accepting reservations for what has been billed as “The most unique Christmas Experience in Northern Michigan.”  Billed as “The Farm By Lantern Light” the full evening activity includes a sleigh ride, a visit to the historic farm and a full length play all rolled into one.  Seating is very limited so reservations are an absolute must.  “The Farm By Lantern Light” will take place on December 7, 8, and 14, 15.  The first performance begins at 6:40 p.m. with additional performances beginning every 20 minutes there after.  Twelve people are admitted to each performance.  The entire performance lasts about two hours.  During the course of the evening, participants will board a horse drawn sleigh and be transported back in time to the year of 1932.  Following the sleigh ride, visitors will stroll through the farm trails, all beautifully lit by kerosene lanterns.  During the course of their walk, visitors will visit each building at the farm complex and in each building another scene of the play, will be presented.  The play is based upon an event which took place in Wellington many years ago.  Now that event has been woven into one of the most heart-warming Christmas stories presented anywhere in Michigan.  A wonderful family event!  Reservations can be made by calling 989-348-5187 or visiting the website at www.wellingtonfarmpark.org.

The Friends of Hartwick Pines State Park in Crawford County will sponsor their annual Critters in the Moonlight Halloween Walk from 5 to 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the park, located at 4216 Ranger Rd.in Grayling. The event is a fun and educational 45-minute trek through Hartwick Pines trails lit by 100 jack-o-lanterns and lantern lights. Meet up with friendly forest critters along the way. A special trail for small children is about 20 minutes long.

The first tour leaves from the Memorial Building porch at 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to wear costumes. For further details, call the park office at 989-348-7068 or Visitor Center at 989-348-2537.

The event is free; however, a Recreation Passport is required for vehicles entering Hartwick Pines State Park. The Recreation Passport has replaced motor vehicle permits for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and state-administered boating access fee sites. This new way to fund Michigan’s outdoor recreation opportunities also helps to preserve state forest campgrounds, trails, and historic and cultural sites in state parks, and provides park development grants to local communities.

Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking “YES” on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area. Nonresident motor vehicles must still display a valid nonresident Recreation Passport ($29 annual; $8 daily) to enter a Michigan state park, recreation area or state-administered boating access fee site; these can be purchased at any state park or recreation area, or through the Michigan e-Store at www.michigan.gov/estore. A change designed to bolster funding for state forest recreation programs and provide better, more coordinated management of all state-administered campsites and non-motorized pathways was approved at the March 8 Natural Resources Commission meeting.

Department of Natural Resources Director Rodney Stokes signed a land use order, effective immediately, that classifies state forest campgrounds and non-motorized pathways as state recreation areas. It requires campers using state forest campgrounds and persons using the state’s non-motorized trails and pathways to have a valid Michigan Recreation Passport on their vehicle.

In January, a reorganization of the DNR’s former Forest Management Division resulted in the transfer of state forest recreation programs to the DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division so that all campgrounds and recreation programs of the Department would be managed by one division.

Since the Recreation Passport was adopted in 2010, it has only been required to enter a state park, recreation area or state-administered boat launch fee site. By requiring the Recreation Passport at state forest campgrounds and non-motorized pathway parking areas, the DNR hopes to increase sales of the Recreation Passport and provide more funding for state forest-based recreation programs.

“We intend to keep all state forest campgrounds open and available for campers,” said Ron Olson, chief of the DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division. “The days of closing state forest campgrounds are over. During this transition, we will raise awareness of the Recreation Passport requirement for state forest campgrounds and non-motorized pathway parking areas, and put those funds back into maintenance and operations of state forest recreation programs.”

The Recreation Passport replaced motor vehicle permits for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and state-administered boating access fee sites. This new way to fund Michigan’s outdoor recreation opportunities also helps to preserve state forest campgrounds, trails, and historic and cultural sites in state parks, and provides park development grants to local communities.

Enforcement of the Recreation Passport at state forest campgrounds and non-motorized pathway parking areas will focus on notification of the change. Visitors who do not have the Recreation Passport will be given the opportunity, without penalty, to secure one for the first year.

Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking “YES” on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area. To learn more about the Recreation Passport, visit www.michigan.gov/recreationpassport, or call 517-241-7275.

Beyond the Garden Wall Garden Club and the AuSable Artisan Village have teamed up this year and are excited to present their 2012 Grayling En Plein Air Garden and Art Walk on Saturday July 14, 2012 from 10AM to 4 PM.  This has become a favorite summer event celebrating Gardens of Northern Michigan.  Extraordinary gardens abound, providing inspirations for the novice and garden enthusiast alike.  Additionally, local artisans will join forces where demonstrations will be taking place at each of the gardens in addition to downtown.

This year’s gardens feature a diverse mix, from Riverside retreats, to forest hideaways, country farm and small space gardens.  Water features, extensive perennial gardens, eclectic garden art, bountiful containers, luscious vegetable gardens, and even a former Christmas tree farm!  Annuals, Perennials, evergreen and native plantings abound.  Do not be surprised if you catch a glimpse of hummingbirds, butterfly and other native wildlife, making this garden walk a photographer’s paradise.

In addition to the visual inspirations, you will have the opportunity to speak to fellow gardeners and glean tips from deer-proofing your garden, to encouraging plants to grow in the sandy dry soil so common to the area.  After a day of strolling the gardens you will be equipped with many ideas in which to emulate some of these great garden secrets in your own yard!

And our local artists are sure to delight your visual sense as well, with their amazing renditions of these glorious gardens.  In keeping with the theme, En Plein Air, they will be demonstrating their artistry throughout the day.  All artwork will be available for sale after the event.  Additionally, we will be holding a drawing for one of the artists painting at the gallery at 4:30PM at the AuSable Artisan Village.  Tickets for the drawing will be available at each of the gardens as well as the gallery.  Be sure to stop in at the gallery to the full spectrum of artwork created by local artists.  You will see original paintings and photography, to pottery, woodworking, glass works, mixed media and much more.

This year’s garden walk will prove to provide something for everyone.  Whether you want to go for a leisurely stroll, or garner ideas for your next garden project, or are just curious about some of the gardens that flank the cottages, log cabins, and city homes, you are sure to enjoy.

This event is co-sponsored by Beyond the Garden Wall Garden Club and the AuSable Artisan Village.  The Garden Club provides educational and inspirational events for its members and the community.  Additionally, the Garden Club sponsors several gardens within the Grayling community.  Proceeds from the event go to these community gardens and events.

Tickets go on sale in June and will be available for just $6 at the following Grayling businesses.  Your ticket will be accompanied by directions to each of the gardens.
