Thousands of acres of state land and miles of groomed trails are made for winter fun in the Grayling area. With easy access from I-75, U.S.127 and M-72, and ample lodging facilities that offer direct trail access or other special amenities, Grayling has become a favorite with snowmobilers. In addition to the hundreds of miles of groomed trails in the county, relatively new to the area is a through-town trail connecting the areas north and south of Grayling.

The through town snowmobile trail was officially opened in the winter of 2002/2003. The directions for this connector are... From the South the trail travels North in front of the Grayling Holiday Inn, Day’s Inn and Patti’s Town House, turning West onto Golf View Drive. Travel on Golf View for approximately fifty yards, at this point riders will turn right and resume traveling north behind Glen’s Market and the Grayling Mini Mall. The trail continues North accessing the Grayling Country Club and tying into the West Side of the railroad grade. Follow the trail along the railroad tracks to the Crawford County Building and you now will pick up the trail maintained by the AuSable Valley Snowmobile Association. Please stay on the trail, drive slowly, respect private property and ride safely.
Not all streets in downtown Grayling are open to snowmobiles. It is possible to access several gas stations, though, as described below. Many snowmobilers also use the more accessible gas stations at M72 west (CJ's Shell station, about 12 miles west of Grayling), Charlie's Truck Stop (4 Mile Road just south of Grayling) and in Frederic.
It is okay to access the alley behind the businesses located on the south side of Michigan Avenue to go to Spike’s Keg O’ Nails. You must exit through the alley upon leaving to get back to the “Trail Through Town Connector”. Do not ride on any city sidewalk. If you would like a copy of city ordinance or a copy of state laws, please send us an email and we'll be happy to mail one to you.
In 2002 the AuSable Valley Snowmobile Association, in cooperation with the DNR, implemented an Emergency Trail Location system that will assist the Emergency Services of Crawford County in the event of an accident on the trails in our area. The system has now been implemented throughout Crawford County.
The system consists of signs that designate the trail number that you are on followed by a location number. The signs can be found at all road crossings as well as along the trails. It is important to remember that these numbers are not a "mile marker" system. These locations are mapped with GPS coordinates and allow the Emergency Services to easily locate those in need of assistance. Simply dial 911, tell the operator you are in Crawford County and give them the number on the locator sign.
The AuSable Valley Snowmobile Association, "Volunteers for Better Trails", is working hard to maintain a pleasant, safe riding experience for everyone. When you're out riding the trails, please think of these hardworking men and respect their efforts. Many volunteer hours are spent by a handful of folks to insure that your snowmobiling experience is the best one possible.
When encountering groomer vehicles on the trails, please slow down and stop off the trail if necessary. Look for and obey the groomer driver's signals to pass. Remember that virtually all of the groomer drivers you will encounter are volunteers.
Please drive carefully - the local snowmobile association is diligent about maintaining the trail system, but periodically directional signs are vandalized and stop signs could be missing.
This is a list of major areas of concern for snowmobilers in the local area. It is not a complete list of state and local laws. For more details see the Crawford County Sheriff Department Website.
Please follow the laws, rules, and use common sense - we don't want anyone's weekend ruined because they broke the law and received a ticket.
Please do not ride on cross country ski trails...the heavy weight of the sleds ruins the trails for the skiers. If you come up on a cross country ski trail and see no signs marking it, you can tell it's a cross country ski trail by the ridges covering the entire trail, with 2 thin indentations running parallel to each other. (The indentations are for the classical skiers who slide their skis along in them, and the part of the trail with ridges is for the skating skiers who literally skate their skis over the trail.)
