Forbush Corner: Sunday, Feb 13, 8:30 am. 28 deg f. Ahhhh…another perfect day with temps rising just above freezing for the high. Next weekend is Presidents Day and a Monday Holiday. Forbush Corner will be closed M thru F, but open Sat, Sun, and Monday. There is a chance of also being open Friday afternoon depending on the grooming & weather.
Ski tip: Keep your spine in a straight line. This includes your neck. Do not make it a pattern of constantly looking up. One should be aware of where the trail is going by just short glances up and then dropping the head. The faster one skis and the more forward on the ski, the lower the head will have to be to keep things lined up. Have a friend watch you as it is so difficult to discover. There should be no strain in your head.
Beginners are vertical on their skis and so the head will be held upright. As the skier improves improves and gets more forward on the skis, it will be necessary to drop the head. At some point your head will be aligned by staring at the Madshus (hopefully) name on your skis.
There is one exception to this rule and that is on the downhills. Looking up and placing the heels firmly down, adds stability. BUT when you reach the bottom and the skis slows, lower the head.
“WHY?” you might ask. Lower back pain is the answer. Most of us older skiers who were taught the “look up” technique now have permanent damage to our lower backs.
This is the single most common and most harmful mistake that I see among the skiers. It was taught to us by a large organization as the proper way to ski.
It is very important to do it properly to avoid the lower back pain and future arthritic changes.
Hanson Hills: Trails are soft…did not set fresh track today. 888-876-2196 for current conditions.
XC Ski Headquarters: February 14, Monday; As of 6AM the temperature is 37 degrees. A cold front will bring down temps to below freezing by 8 AM. We will let the snow pack harden up for a few hours and start grooming today just before noon. Groomer Greg will start Ginzu grooming all the trails later this morning after which we will have very good conditions on all trails.
Because of the following forecast, I recommend that you contact your destination before you head out to find out current trail conditions.
