STATE PARKS

Wherever you are in Michigan, you are never more than an hour from one of Michigan's 96 state park or recreation areas. Two of Michigan's finest state parks are located near Grayling.

Hartwick Pines State Park
Rt. E Box 3840, Grayling MI 49738, phone (989)348-7068. Hartwick Pines State Park features one of the remaining tracts of "old growth" forest in the Midwest, the Michigan Forest Visitor Center and a logging camp museum. The 9,762 acre park also offers hiking, mountain bike trails and fishing opportunities on two inland lakes and the East Branch of the AuSable River. Take I-75 North of Grayling and go east on M-93 two miles.

N. Higgins Lake State Park
11252 N. Higgins Lake Dr., Roscommon, MI 48653, (989)821-6125. North Higgins Lake State Park offers a glimpse of Michigan's history, featuring a Civilian Conservation Corps museum and a self-guided nature trail through a state forest nursery area dating back to 1903. The park also has a shallow swimming area appropriate for families with young children. Boat rental is available. From I-75 take exit 244 and go left six miles. From US-27, take the Military Road exit and follow sign to the park.


STATE FOREST CAMPGROUNDS

Michigan boasts over 150 State Forest Campgrounds. Twelve sites are located near Grayling. Daily fees range: $4 to $8. Pay by check payable to the State of Michigan and deposit in the "fee collection pipe".

Shupac Lake
30 sites, boating, swimming, fishing, special regulations on boat motors. 2 miles N. of Lovells via Twin Bridge Rd.

Jones Lake
42 sites, boating, swimming, fishing, ramp for small boats. 9 miles E of Frederic via Co. Rd. 612.

Upper Manistee River
30 sites, 10 walk-in sites, canoeing, fishing ground camping for canoeists. 6.5 miles W. of Frederic via Co. Rd. 612.

Manistee River Bridge
23 sites, canoeing, good trout fishing, canoe access. 8 miles W. of Grayling via M-72.

Lake Margrethe
37 sites, swimming, fishing, boat ramp & parking 5 miles W. of Grayling via M-72.

AuSable River Canoe Camp
Day Use and canoe access campsites only, fishing, AuSable River. 7 miles E. of Grayling via North Down River Rd., & Headquarters Rd.

Burton's Landing
12 sites, canoeing, fishing on AuSable River, canoe access. 4.5 miles E. of Grayling via M-72 & Burton's Landing Rd.

Keystone Landing
18 sites, canoeing, fishing on AuSable River, canoe access. 6 miles E. of Grayling via M-72 and Keystone Landing Rd.

Canoe Harbor
44 sites, canoeing, fishing on AuSable S. Branch, 10 canoe group campsites, Mason Trail Pathway. 15 miles SE of Grayling via M-72.

White Pine Canoe Camp
Canoe access campsites only, fishing on AuSable River 12 miles E. of Grayling via M-72 & McMaster's Bridge Rd.

Rainbow Bend
6 sites, canoeing, fishing on AuSable River, canoe access, canoe group camping sites. 15 miles E. of Grayling via M-72 and McMasters Bridge Rd.

Parmalee Bridge, 4 Mile Trail Camp
50 sites, horse camp on Michigan Shore to Shore Riding Hiking Trail. From I-75 and Four Mile rd. interchange, E. on Four Mile Rd. 4 miles, turn S. into camp.
