The Grayling Fish Hatchery began in 1914 when community leader Rasmus Hanson obtained the property. In 1916 he formed the Grayling Fish Hatchery Club. The members were among the first in Michigan to recognize the need to reinforce natural trout reproductions in our streams by hatching and rearing trout in protected ponds.
After 10 years of operation, the hatchery was sold to the State of Michigan in 1926 for $10,000. It remained in operation until 1960. Another Fish Hatchery Committee was formed and after four years of working on the project the Michigan Department of Natural Resources issued a permit in 1983 to Crawford County. The purpose was to open the hatchery as a tourist attraction to view adult populations of trout.
