“Hartwick Pines Logging Museum’s Winter Lecture Series to begin with program about Edward Hartwick.”
(November 23, 2009) The annual winter lecture series sponsored by the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum will begin on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 2pm with the program “Who was Edward Hartwick?” Hartwick Pines State Park was named for the Grayling native, but few really know who Edward Hartwick was and why his wife, Karen Michelson Hartwick, chose to purchase and donate the land to the state in the memory of her husband. The park’s historian, Rob Burg will present this 60 minute program and introduce the life of Edward Hartwick to those in attendance.
This will be the first of four programs in the annual Winter Lecture Series. On January 17, the program will be “75 Years of Hartwick Pines State Park.” On February 14, “The Higgins Lake Nursery and the Reforestation of Michigan” will be presented. The final program of the winter series will be presented on Sunday, March 7 and will feature “The legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Grayling Area.” All of these presentations are held in the auditorium at the Michigan Forest Visitor Center at Hartwick Pines State Park and begin at 2pm. Free refreshments are served following the programs. Program topics are subject to change.
Although the Logging Museum is closed for the winter, the park is busy in the winter. Come out for the Winter Trails Day event on January 9, and cross country ski nights and snowshoe programs in January and February.
The Winter Lecture Series is free however a state park motor vehicle permit is required for park entry. For more information on this event, please call Rob Burg at (989) 348-2537 or by email at burgr@michigan.gov, or on the internet at www.michigan.gov/loggingmuseum.
