Hartwick Pines State Park will offer guided snowshoe hikes through the old growth forest on Jan. 7 and 21, Feb. 4 and 18, and March 3. These hikes will give visitors to Hartwick Pines a chance to try out snowshoes and hike through the Lower Peninsula’s largest stand of old-growth white pines. Guided by a park interpreter or historian, participants will learn about the forest in the winter and discover the importance of winter to Michigan’s logging industry in the 1800s, all while getting great exercise.

The hikes begin at the Michigan Forest Visitor Center with an orientation and introduction to Hartwick Pines and a short talk on winter survival and equipment. The group then departs from the auditorium of the visitor center into the woods. The hike is approximately one mile and will head through the old growth forest of white pine and hemlock, stop at deer beds, and look for signs of porcupines and other animals that use the forest in the winter. The group will visit the logging museum, where participants will have a chance to warm up with a cup of hot cider around the elevated fire pit at the logging museum, and hear stories about the “shantyboys” who endured a winter in the woods. Participants may return to the visitor center on their own or explore other trails in the park.

The guided hikes will begin at 10a.m. and 1 p.m.  The hikes will be limited to 20 participants for each hike. Advanced registration is required. The hikes are free, but please call the visitor center at Hartwick Pines at 989-348-2537 or stop in at the Visitor Center (normally open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to sign up. Some snowshoes are available to use for free, however check for availability when registering.

Other winter activities at Hartwick Pines include cross-country ski nights on Jan. 14 and 28, and Feb. 11 and 25.  Cross-country skiing on groomed ski trails is available everyday, weather permitting.  A warming room is available in the visitor center during open hours every weekend and most weekdays.

Hartwick Pines State Park is located at 4216 Ranger Rd. in Grayling. For more information on the programs at Hartwick Pines, please call 989-348-2537 or visit the park’s websites at www.michigan.gov/hartwickpines or www.michigan.gov/loggingmusem.

There is no charge for the snowshoe hikes; however a Recreation Passport is required for park entry.

Effective Oct. 1, 2010, the Recreation Passport replaced the resident motor vehicle permit (MVP). All resident motor vehicles must display the new Recreation Passport when their vehicle registration is renewed, for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and permit required boating access sites. Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking “Yes” on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area.

Non-resident motor vehicles must still display a valid non-resident MVP ($29 annual; $8 daily) to enter a Michigan state park, recreation area or state-administered boating access site. Non-resident permits are available at any state park entrance or through the Michigan e-Store at www.michigan.gov/estore.

Historical interpretation at Hartwick Pines is provided by the Michigan Historical Center. The Michigan Historical Center is part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Learn more at www.michigan.gov/museum.

The Irish Times calls SLIDE “traditional musicians with attitude” and credits the group with “bringing drawing room grandeur and high spirits together” with it’s diverse songs, which range from soulful and sorrowful to contagiously energetic. Folk Roots Magazine proclaims,” There’s plenty of action and flamboyance in Slides’s music,” which merges “swagger with traditional expertise.” SLIDE will be performing at the Kirtland Center for the Performing Arts on March 16, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

About Slide

This rollicking band’s origins date back to Ireland in 1999,when Slide performed in various pubs for a local music festival in Bandon, Co. Cork. The group’s intoxicating music easily won over the crowd, which demanded more of the unique and colourful sound. The positive reaction inspired Slide to release The Flying Pig, which Irish Music Magaize hailed as “beautifully recorded, to preserve the brilliance and clarity of solo and ensemble playing that is positively mind-blowing.” The publication awarded Slide its Best Newcomer distinction in 2001, leading to gigs for the band throughout Europe.

In its insightful second album Harmonic Motion, Slide celebrates self-exploration and collective innovation in a series of self-penned songs that drew critical appraise. The record showcases a variety of clever arrangements – from sensitive whistle harmonies to driving, high-powered strings – and captivating lyrics that Irish Music Magazine calls “inventive and provocative.” The publication adds, “The melodies and musicianship are first-rate. …[Slide] can sing, they can write, they can dance across fingerboards and piano keys, buttons, and bows, and by crikey they can play.”

The album attracted the attention of renowned Irish talents including Grammy-winning composer Bill Whelan, singers and songwriters Liam Clancy, Damien Dempsey and John Spillane, Danú and the Progressive group Stocktons Wing – who eventually recruited Slide for their own music projects.

In 2005, Slide – which consists of concertina virtuoso Aogán Lynch, fiddler-guitarist Daire Bracken, bouzouki and mandolin player Mick Broderick, pianist-flautist Éamonn de Barra – won the Young Musicwide Award. Developed in 2001 by the Arts Council of Ireland, Young Musicwide encourages young people to pursue professional careers in traditional Irish Music, Chamber Music, and Jazz and gives promoters access to the best Irish talents. “Slide successfully combined the qualities of traditional Irish music with contemporary musical ideas. They are exceptionally talented and their music has both grace and power”, said celebrated Irish musician-producer Donal Lunny, who helped judge the competition.

Overneath is their third studio album and saw the band hone their creative abilities. It is an exciting addition to Slide’s previous two recordings with receiving great critical acclaim.

Slide have recently been joined by the greatly talented Galwegian, Dave Curley who joined the group for their hugely successful 2008 US Tours. An expanded line up has provided for an even larger live sound with great new additions in songs and dance. For their fourth CD venture Slide bypassed the studio and recorded where their fans are always most excited, live from the stage.

An Evening of Celtic and Celtic-Inspired Music by:
Kelly Shively: Singing songs that combine love, family, and farming, with the humor, faith and hope also involved in her Northern Michigan lifestyle, Kelly Shively loves the old ways and traditional music, and tries to weave them into the songs she writes. Her clear soprano voice has been known to stop people in their tracks and draw them in, as she sings the songs of her heart. She accompanies herself on Celtic harp, banjo, banjola, banjimer (is there a pattern here?) and fiddle.

Pam Luce: A “collector of tunes”, Pam Luce developed her vocal skills in school and community choirs, and church. Visiting family in New Brunswick, Canada flavored her musical choices with the texture of the mountain. She loves to share her Celtic and mountain story songs a cappella with her lovely contralto voice, and occasionally accompanies herself with her very special mountain dulcimer, “Mabel”.

When these two women combine their voices, the harmonies that come so naturally to them will soothe your spirit and weave a web around your souls. These women are not to be missed, as they present favorite traditional Celtic as well as Celtic-inspired mountain ballads and some of Kelly’s original songs.

Dan House: Local musician and veteran of a couple of appearances at previous art gallery concert series in Grayling, Dan brings with him a strong love for instrumental excellence through his fingerstyle guitar, mandolin, and mountain dulcimer solo arrangements as well as an artistic aesthetic for providing the right backgrounds for framing and reinforcing his, and others’ vocal efforts.   His repertoire includes many Celtic tunes and his family tree and background contribute strongly to it.
