Hartwick Pines State Park will offer guided snowshoe hikes through the old growth forest on Jan. 7 and 21, Feb. 4 and 18, and March 3. These hikes will give visitors to Hartwick Pines a chance to try out snowshoes and hike through the Lower Peninsula’s largest stand of old-growth white pines. Guided by a park interpreter or historian, participants will learn about the forest in the winter and discover the importance of winter to Michigan’s logging industry in the 1800s, all while getting great exercise.
The hikes begin at the Michigan Forest Visitor Center with an orientation and introduction to Hartwick Pines and a short talk on winter survival and equipment. The group then departs from the auditorium of the visitor center into the woods. The hike is approximately one mile and will head through the old growth forest of white pine and hemlock, stop at deer beds, and look for signs of porcupines and other animals that use the forest in the winter. The group will visit the logging museum, where participants will have a chance to warm up with a cup of hot cider around the elevated fire pit at the logging museum, and hear stories about the “shantyboys” who endured a winter in the woods. Participants may return to the visitor center on their own or explore other trails in the park.
The guided hikes will begin at 10a.m. and 1 p.m. The hikes will be limited to 20 participants for each hike. Advanced registration is required. The hikes are free, but please call the visitor center at Hartwick Pines at 989-348-2537 or stop in at the Visitor Center (normally open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to sign up. Some snowshoes are available to use for free, however check for availability when registering.

The History:
The “Cote Dame Marie” name comes from a hill range located on the Hanson State Game Refuge/Camp Grayling Military Reservation and has WWI significance. In 1918 the German Army’s last line of defense was the Hindenburg Line. The key to breaking the German line were two hills-the Cote Dame Marie and the Cote de Chatillion. The Michigan 126th Regiment found a gap in the barb wire fortifications but was pinned down by German machine gun fire. Captian Edward Strom then led seven men to find another gap. After finding a gap they attacked up a steep hill inn a single rush without loss of life. A full assault followed and the Hindenburg line was pierced.

PLACE: Ausable Artisan Village Art Center and Gallery, 219 Michigan Ave, Graying. (the old Ben Franklin store)
COST: $40.00
WHAT YOU WILL NEED; A notebook and pen; clothes that can get smudged, streaked, etc
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this afternoon’s activities will be to introduce the idea of art as a way of knowing. What we will be doing is playing with basic art materials (pencil, crayon, paper, craypas, charcoal) in ways that lead to and touch our inner awareness, so that we learn about ourselves and our place in the world through art. The process is fun and interesting; sometimes enlightening, sometimes perplexing, and almost always brings something new to the table. Whatever else is true, it requires no artistic ability at all ( If you “can’t draw a straight line” this experience will be a perfect fit. On the other hand, if you can, this workshop was made for you!).If nothing else, it will get your creative juices running, which is good all by itself and, more than likely, you will find in it a source of inner guidance and comfort. Because this process is so unique, we will be happy to offer further workshops if people are interested in that possibility.
“Making the Creative Connection: Art as Knowing” is based on the Open Studio Process originated by Pat Allen, Phd., and on her book, “Art is a Way of Knowing”. The facilitator, Sue McDonald, MA,ACSW, is a cetified Open Studio Process instructor, with 15 years experience working with the OSP process.
