The Hartwick Pines Logging Museum will be presenting a program about “Michigan’s White Pine Era” for the public on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 2pm. This program will be held at the Michigan Forest Visitor Center at Hartwick Pines State Park and admission is free.

Come learn about the role that the logging of the white pine played in Michigan’s and the country’s history. In the 19th century, the cutting of the white pine was Michigan’s most important industry and much of it happened right here in the northern Lower Peninsula.   The program will consist of the viewing of “Michigan’s White Pine Era”, a 14 minute film that was produced for viewing at the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing, and can only be viewed at there and at Hartwick Pines. After the film, historian Rob Burg will conduct an additional thirty minute program on logging in Michigan in the 19th century.

Another presentation of the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum’s Winter Lecture Series will be held on Sunday, February 20. This program “Winter Logging” will explore the role that the winter season played in the logging industry. It will also begin at 2pm and be at the Michigan Forest Visitor Center.

Come join us for these approximately sixty minute programs and have some refreshments in a relaxing environment.  For more information, please call (989) 348-2537 or email Rob Burg at burgr@michigan.gov.

Besides the winter lectures, other programs this winter include guided snowshoe hikes on February 5 and 19 and March 5, and Cross Country Ski by Lantern Light on January 29, and February 12 and 26.
